Hey guys, Caroline from Burkatron blog here. I’m excited to share a project made especially for my favourite time of year, yup, you guessed it... Christmas!! One of my favourite things to do each year is to make my own gift toppers. I love to decorate presents with something fun and handmade as it’s great for adding a personal touch when gifting to family and friends.
I like to try out new methods and materials when crafting so I’ve chosen to make three different DIY toppers for this tutorial. I love that these are all simple to make yet still have a big impact. I’ve already started my Christmas shopping so I’m sure it won’t be long until I’m making more of these again…
So, let’s get started!
Clay tree gift toppers
Step 1. Roll out the polymer clay with a rolling pin. Using a craft knife cut a simple tree shape into the clay. (You could also use Christmas cookie cutters to cut out your shapes.)
Step 2. Once you have cut out your shapes remove any excess clay. (If you want to be able to thread string through your tree to attach it to your gifts make a small hole in the top of each tree.)
Step 3. Bake the tree shapes in the oven according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once cooled, grab a permanent marker and decorate them. I’ve gone for a simple monochrome pattern but you can be as colourful as you wish.
Step 4. You can either attach the toppers with some double sided tape or use string to tie them to your Christmas gifts.
Folded paper gift toppers
Step 1. Pick your paper, I’ve used a selection of modern patterned foil and coloured paper for my toppers. Next, find something round in a size that you can use as a template. A small dish, coaster or bottle work well!
Step 2. Use your template to draw 8-10 circles onto the reverse side of your paper.
Step 3. Cut out the paper circles and fold them all in half (right sides facing if it’s patterned paper.)
Step 4. Run glue along one half of the folded circle.
Step 5. Take a second folded circle and press one half to the glue covered half of the first one.
Step 6. Repeat this process until you’ve attached all of your paper circles. Don’t glue together the final sides as that will create a 3D sphere shape which you can’t stick to your gifts.
Step 7. You can try making some in different colours and sizes. To attach the toppers simply glue the back and press them straight onto your gifts.
Pom Pom gift toppers
Step 1. Open one arm of the pom pom maker and wrap it with yarn.
Step 2. Repeat on the other arm before closing.
Step 3. Use scissors to cut around the pom pom maker.
Step 4. Cut off a length of yarn and tie it through the middle of the pom pom maker with knot.
Step 5. Pull the pom pom maker apart to reveal a perfect pom pom! Trim the loose ends with scissors.
Step 6. Attach to your gifts using double sided tape or tie them onto some string wrapped around the gift.
There you have it.. 3 simple but statement handmade gift toppers you can try making this holiday season!
